Lightbulb New Paragon / New to game

Hello,

I am a lvl 4 Paragon, and I figured before I get too far I would like to seek some wise counsel on the forums. Id like to know what are the best Profession combos would be and where I should stack the points at.

I have only had the game for 4-5 days now. My first toon was a Ele/Mes but I realized I wanted to try Paragon instead.

Thanks for your time and help

Part way down the first post is a discussion on Paragon Secondaries.

Always check the Stickied Guides. They are there for a reason.

'I played a Par/ Ranger and its good at this or that, and you need to put most points in ___ for this kinda build.'

I am thankful for your reply and maybe I wasnt clear on what I was looking for.

I would like to hear more from peoples personal experience with the class and what THEY suggest for me.

I did just read the sticky and I was at the wiki before I even made this post.

But being new at the game I am still pretty lost after reading quite some bit.

The Guide and wiki dont state opinion so much and thats what im kinda looking for... what works best, which secondary and what talent points and even skills.

Thanks again for your time and help

Paragon/warrior is going to be the best route PvE wise. There isn't really anything too interesting from the other professions that would benefit you that much, except maybe the Conjures from Elementalist. Honestly you'll have a hard time fitting in all the good skills from paragon let alone what your secondary might have to offer.

What the best build would be for you kind of depends on what you want your character to be able to do. Although, as someone who's only been playing GW for a couple of months, I know what you mean about being overwhelmed by all the info at the very beginning.

If you want your Paragon to be a major damage-dealer (i.e., if you want to be the crusader or "hero who saves the world" in your party), then you might want to try Warrior, Ranger, or maybe even Monk as your secondary. The first two will give you support for up-front whacking at enemies (for example, Warrior gives you shouts that buff defense or attack, and synergize well with Paragon Command/Motivation skills, or Ranger gives you access to skills that can add conditions to your attacks, like Apply Poison, and the ever-useful self-heal skill, Troll Unguent). Monk gives you a reusable resurrection skill (ALWAYS useful, but especially if you are new to the game, or prefer to play with henchmen/hero parties), as well as reliable healing, buffing, and smiting skills.

If you would rather play a support role in your party, consider Monk, Mesmer (although I wouldn't recommend a Mesmer to a newbie, cuz they are one of the more complicated classes to understand and play effectively), or Elementalist. Monk, again, for party-wide healing and buffing that synergizes with the Paragon's abilities in those directions. Mesmer can contribute interrupting or enemy shutdown abilities, and Elementalist can add AoE (area of effect) damage with fire skills, high damage to single targets with Air magic, snares with Water Magic, and damage or defense with Earth.

I will let others offer advice on Dervish, Necromancer, Assassin or Ritualist secondaries, cuz I don't have much experience with them yet.

But what it really comes down to is.....there isn't a WRONG way to make your character. Talk to all of the profession NPC's in Churrhir Fields, and try out the skills they give you for free. See what seems like it would be a fun combination with your Paragon abilities, and mess around with it for a while before "officially" taking it as your secondary. You may not have realized, but you can run around in Churrhir Fields trying out different secondary skills FOR AS LONG AS YOU WANT, just don't tell First Spear Dehvad that you "officially" want a particular profession as your secondary until you're ready.

And also keep in mind, if you pick something that sounds like a lot of fun, and later find that it doesn't work as well as you'd thought, you are NOT locked into things forever. You'll only have to go through 4-5 missions before you will be given a quest that will eventually unlock the ability to change your secondary profession, so don't think you're stuck with just one forever. The same is true for allocating attribute points. If you put a bunch of points into, say, Motivation, and later discover that you're using Command skills much more, just go back to any town or outpost, and take the points out of Motivation and put them into Command. The character creation mechanics in this game are REALLY flexible, which is wonderful, IMO!!!

I'd say warrior also for secondary, it offer some nice shout that goes well with paragon, like save yourselves and shield up.

As for build, a nice mixture of attack skills and support skills, be it offensively from the Command line or defensively from Motivation line, would be a wise choice. So 3 attacks, 3 supports, IAS = aggressive refrain, and signet of return. That's just a general guideline, don't have to be exactly like that.

Attribute spread at level 20 before runed with all 200 points should usually be -
9-11 Leadership
11-12 Spear Mastery
6-8 Command (depend on your shield and build)
or
10 Motivation (forgot some of the break point for Motivation skills at the moment, but I think I usually run 10, and with rune it is 11)

Wow thanks so much for the advice guys. That what I was looking for.

I think Im leaning towards Para / War or Para / Ranger.

Im too too interested in being a caster or a healer. I just made a Ele / Mes and decided I didnt feel like playing the caster roll so much.

Im leaning more toward Ranger just because I like the idea of a 'ranger' and possibly having a pet?

But at the same time if Para / War is a stronger combo Ill probably take that.

What do you all think would be pros and cons of Para/Ranger or Para/War?

For instance would I have a pet if I was a Ranger? Would my attacks be quicker or something because of being a marksman?

Would a Warrior secondary give me stronger shouts and team dynamic? Would I be a stronger tank or dmg dealer? etc etc?

Thanks so much for your time guys, I really just wanna try and pick the right 'class' from the start, as you know its a important decision in game.

There are no inherant effects on taking different secondaries.

/Ranger, there are really no pros. Pets are weak.
/Warrior has Shields Up, and Watch Yourself. Also For Great Justice, Save Yourselves.

ahh ok, so i just read somewhere that it seems warrior and monk have more skills that are useful to a paragon.

As far as I can tell, there really isn't any pros to be a P/R. P/Mo don't really offer anything other than maybe remove hex.

Don't worry too much about your secondary. Until you get to lvl 20 and have all your attribute points you are far better off putting everything in your primary profession then spreading them out and getting too-weak secondary skills. You will also be able to change your secondary profession about the same time you reach lvl 20 in the nightfall campaign, so you aren't locked into your secondary by any means. Right now most of the really overpowering stuff a paragon can use on their secondary have been nerfed. The exception to that is Save Yourself!, but that is a PvE skill and will take you a long time to get, and its in factions.

Paragon/Warrior all the way. You'll eventually nab all skills to run an Imbagon bar, arguably the most powerful PvE build of any class.
